Write or edit a lesson

The block editor, start to finish, including ordering and images.

Getting to the editor

  1. Go to Content → Courses and pick the course you want to work on.
  2. Open Authoring. The course you selected carries across.
  3. Find the lesson you want, or add a new one from the header of the lesson list.

Using the block editor

The editor works like a document: click into any block and type. Blocks grow as you write, and there's no separate save-and-preview cycle for text.

  • Hover between two blocks and a + appears — click it to insert a new block there.
  • In an empty text block, type / to open the menu of block types.
  • The ⠿ handle on the left of a block drags it to reorder, or opens a menu for that block.
  • For images, you can upload a file or pick a figure already extracted from one of your SOPs.
  • For video, paste a YouTube or Vimeo link, or upload a file and watch the progress bar.

Getting the order right

Lessons are read top to bottom, so order them like a story: what this is, why it matters, how to do it, what goes wrong. You can drag lessons within a course too — the order you set is the order learners get.

Writing for the people who'll read it

  • Short sentences. Many readers are working through this on a phone between appointments, and for some English is a second language.
  • Name the consequence, not just the rule. "Both doors shut before you open the cage" lands harder with "a scared cat is out the door and into the car park in two seconds".
  • One idea per lesson. If you're writing about two things, that's two lessons.
  • Use the clinic's own words for equipment and rooms. Matching what people actually say beats being formally correct.

Building a course from a document

If you have an existing SOP or handbook, Content → "Build a course from a document" will draft a whole course from it — lessons and questions — which you then edit like anything else. It's a starting point, not a finished product: read every lesson before it goes live.
